Owned and managed by Monmouthshire County Council, the theatre is part of the town hall building and dates back to 1870. It was extensively renovated in the early 1990s and boasts an intimate auditorium with excellent sight-lines and acoustics, which succeeds in blending historic and traditional features with a modern ambience.
We are very proud of the fact that many headline artistes from the UK and overseas visit the Borough Theatre (going back to The Beatles in 1963…) as well as some of the most interesting new companies creating theatre and dance. Our programme aims to appeal to all tastes and ages – with shows for everyone from pre-school years upwards.
The performing tradition runs deep in Abergavenny and the town supports many local amateur theatre and operatic companies who regularly perform at the Borough Theatre. A4B (Acting 4 the Borough) is an umbrella organisation for the longest running societies including AAODS, AAODS Juniors, Abergavenny Pantomime Company, Abergavenny Theatre Group and Breakthrough Productions – some of which were established over 100 years ago! The committee also runs the successful A4B awards scheme and has raised over £100,000 for equipment for the theatre over the last 30 years.
Although much has been achieved, the ever growing demand for use of the theatre from both the professional and community sectors only goes to demonstrate that much work lies ahead in the quest to extend and develop the activities and facilities which have made the Borough Theatre Monmouthshire’s “Jewel in the Crown”.
There are many ways in which you can help us achieve our aims. You can join us as a volunteer member of our front of house or technical team. You can make a donation towards – or sponsor – our activities, and you can support us by bringing friends and family along with you to watch events in this wonderful and historic building.
We look forward to welcoming you to the Borough Theatre!
