January Refurbishment News
Welcome our updates on the progress of our exciting £1.04 million refurbishment of the Borough Theatre.
Secured commitment to funding.
As you can imagine most of our efforts towards the end of last year focused on securing the finance to allow the refurbishment to move forward.
We have identified the funding for the refurbishment, and it has been endorsed by full council. The forecast expenditure for the total project is £1,042,000. The majority of the funding is from Monmouthshire County Councils Capital budget with additional funds from the Arts Council for Wales, Welsh Government and Monmouthshire’s Transforming Towns and Access for All budgets and support from Abergavenny Town Council.
Principle contractor has been appointed.
GKR have been engaged as the principal contractor. They conducted some preliminary work before Christmas before starting fully on January 4th. This has been sequenced this way amongst other things to minimise the impact on the market at Christmas. They have opened up the space and are currently preparing to install the plant for the new heating and cooling system.
Abergavenny Box office.
We have been developing our offer to sell tickets online and in person for other venues and events in north Monmouthshire and have done so for a number of groups. As this develops we’ll be able to offer groups presenting events in and around Abergavenny more facilities around tickets sales and reporting.
Although it is early days in terms of the construction period things are on track at the moment and so we are currently confident in an opening date in early Autumn 2022. This give us time for mobilisation and training after the space is handed back from the contractors.
We’re planning the Autumn season for when we reopen and of course have a number of events that had be moved because of the first lockdown. We think we’ve got some great shows in the pipeline and look forward to presenting them on our wonderful new theatre.
