Borough Theatre, Abergavenny
Highlights of the Autumn Season include an evening with TV comedy stars Rory Bremner & Jan Ravens, Andy Fairweather Low returns to the theatre with his Big Band and the European Union Chamber Orchestra perform a Sunday afternoon classical recital.
This season the Borough Theatre has a great music programme commencing with prog-folk pioneers Magna Carta. Early booking is recommended for two nights of the ever-popular Talon: The Best of the Eagles, and one night with Maddy Prior & The Carnival Band. Other music events include Dire Streets, Genesis Connected, Let’s Hang On: The Music of Frankie Valli and the popular and quirky seven-piece band The Temperance Seven.
There’s a wealth of comedy events including the new date for Nicholas Parsons, Rich Hall returns with a brand new show; the comedy female impersonator Ceri Dupree will entertain audiences and George Egg: DIY Chef performs an inspiring and inventive evening of stand-up, live cooking and comedy lecture.
Dance lovers will be delighted with Cascade Dance Theatre’s Frankenstein, visceral and engaging this production features five performers and two musicians.
This November the theatre has programmed three events to celebrate the 70th Anniversary of the NHS… Broadcaster, journalist, author, campaigner and comic, Dr Phil Hammond uses humour and modern references to chart the NHS from 1948 to as long as she lasts; The Welsh National Theatre Company, Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru have created a Welsh language theatre piece, Nyrsys, which is based on interviews with real nurses and Gareth John Bale returns to the Borough as Aneurin Bevan in the critically acclaimed two-man show Nye & Jennie.
Other theatre pieces include Joe Orton’s classic farce Loot, performed by the much loved theatre company, Black Rat Productions and Rebecca Vaughan (Dalloway, Austen’s Women and Female Gothic) returns with three seasonal tales of terror to scintillate the gooseflesh for dark Christmas nights in her one-woman show Christmas Gothic.
As always, there’s a wealth of talent from local performers: Concept Players present Merrily We Roll Along; Breakthrough Productions return with A Very Merry Christmas – a brand new comedy by Abergavenny Chronicle Editor Liz Davies; the award-winning AAODS Juniors present the half-term family favourite Oliver!, Abergavenny Star Players present Made in Dagenham (all proceeds to Acting 4 The Borough) and Atlantic Ladies – The Play is a new musical play that chronicles the amazing tales of Abergavenny’s Elaine Theaker and her Atlantic Ladies’ completion of their record-breaking row form the Canaries to the Caribbean.
Come and celebrate the festivities with National demonstrator Lucy Ellis as she creates amazing floral designs on stage for the Abergavenny Flower Arrangement Society; Keith Davies and his own ‘Memphis Mafia’ return with his popular tribute to Elvis, Abergavenny’s own award-winning brass band present The Magic of Christmas and as usual, we end the year with Welcome To Christmas – a fun Christmas concert to put you in the festive mood!
